About anxiety

Anxiety has affected at least a third of the population at some point in their lives.
It is a very important and natural response, which only becomes a problem when it is inappropriately exaggerated, creating phobias, panic attacks, insomnia, physical symptoms such as IBS, insomnia or frequent aches and loss of control. It is likely to worsen when you are feeling tired or experiencing too much stress in your life.
Factors contributing to an anxiety response may include pressure in the workplace, problems in relationships, or significant milestones such as births, weddings, divorces, etc.
People experience anxiety in a variety of different ways including feelings of irritability, panic attacks and insomnia. Common to most sufferers is a sense of having lost control.

Clients coming for help in understanding and controlling their anxiety often report feeling:
• anxious about their anxiety itself
• angry at themselves for feeling anxious
• embarrassed if others see their anxiety
• worried about passing their anxiety on to their children

Hypnosis in the treatment of anxiety- and stress-related disorders

Self-hypnosis training represents a rapid, cost-effective, nonaddictive and safe alternative to medication for the treatment of anxiety-related conditions… The tremendous volume of research provides compelling evidence that hypnosis is an efficacious treatment for state anxiety (e.g., prior to tests, surgery and medical procedures) and anxiety-related disorders, such as headaches and irritable bowel syndrome.

Corydon Hammond, D. (2010) Hypnosis in the treatment of anxiety- and stress-related disorders. Expert Review of Neurotherapeutics 10, 2: 263-273 [online] Available at:   [Accessed 10 May 2012].

Hypnosis reduces preoperative anxiety in adult patients.

We found that patients in the hypnosis group were significantly less anxious postintervention as compared with patients in the attention-control group and the control group. Moreover, on entrance to the operating rooms, the hypnosis group reported a significant decrease of 56% in their anxiety level whereas the attention-control group reported an increase of 10% in anxiety and the control group reported an increase of 47% in their anxiety. In conclusion, we found that hypnosis significantly alleviates preoperative anxiety.
